Dredd 3D helmet build – part 4: Bondo

Tonight I started the Bondo (or as we in the Southern Hemisphere like to call it, Builder’s Bog!) phase of the build.

Builder's Bog

Builder’s Bog or Bondo?

Next to the initial pepping (glueing the Pepakura model together) of the helmet, I find this to be one of the hardest steps. Too much Bondo and you are sanding forever, not enough and you can sand right through the paper and into the fibreglass! Do that and it’s Bondo time again.

Half the helmet is Bondo’d now, With luck, I can do the other half tomorrow night. It only took me about 40 minutes.

Look I’m finished!

I use baking paper taped to my bench for mixing Bondo as well as when I’m working with resin. Nothing sticks to it!

Okay, so I’m half finished

Don’t look at the mess!

Looking good though

Maybe over the weekend, I’ll get to do the first round of sanding and a coat of primer… Fingers crossed.

In other news, the silicone brush with the shortened bristles worked a treat when I was putting on the second layer of fibreglass!
